The 2020 season will commence on 28th March 2020 with an away game at Singleton. The season will finish on 8th August with an away game at Southern Beaches.The Gropers will field teams in Premier 1 and Premier 2 with Medowie Marauders fielding a team in Premier 3.The home games to be played at Medowie are yet to be decided.Bring on the 2020 season!!
Nelson Bay Rugby Club, known as The Gropers, play in the Newcastle and Hunter Premier Division competition. The 2020 season will start on 28th March 2020.Formed in 1978 as part of Port Hunter Rugby (Stockton), the Gropers were formally established in 1983 and celebrated 25 years in 2008.In 2017, the Gropers formed a joint partnership with Medowie Marauders, with the Marauders playing in the NHRU Premier 3rd Grade competition. This continues for the 2020 season.
Adam Edwards has played for the Gropers since 2007 when he migrated to Nelson Bay from Wanganui. Adze was player-coach in 2017 and 2019 and was a part of the 2018 team that reached the finals of the NHRU Premier Grade.In 2020, Adze has been selected for the Newcastle and Hunter Wildfires, playing in the 22-15 victory over Illawarra in the Steel City Challenge.
The Gropers support the Core Values of Rugby Union with respect to referees - coaches and spectators should NOT:Enter the field of play during a game;Verbally question a referee’s decision from the touchline;Openly disrespect the referee;Approach the referee at half time, unless invited to do so;;Tell players to “ignore the referee”;Fail to acknowledge the referee’s participation;Verbally abuse, swear at or make physical contact with a referee at anytime.
