The 2020 season has been cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.
Planning will now start for the 2021 season with the hope that rugby will be able to return to Bill Strong Oval next year.

Nelson Bay Rugby
Nelson Bay Rugby Club, known as The Gropers, play in the Newcastle and Hunter Premier Division competition. The 2020 season will start on 28th March 2020.
Formed in 1978 as part of Port Hunter Rugby (Stockton), the Gropers were formally established in 1983 and celebrated 25 years in 2008.
In 2017, the Gropers formed a joint partnership with Medowie Marauders, with the Marauders playing in the NHRU Premier 3rd Grade competition.

Nelson Bay Rugby Club is proud to announce a $202K grant to rebuild the building on half-way to provide 2 female friendly dressing sheds, a store room and a referees' change room. The grant also provides for a ramp to the clubhouse to make it more accessible for the disabled and mothers with prams.

The Gropers support the Core Values of Rugby Union with respect to referees - coaches and spectators should NOT:
Enter the field of play during a game;
Verbally question a referee’s decision from the touchline;
Openly disrespect the referee;
Approach the referee at half time, unless invited to do so;;
Tell players to “ignore the referee”;
Fail to acknowledge the referee’s participation;
Verbally abuse, swear at or make physical contact with a referee at anytime.
The Newcastle and Hunter Wildfires will return to the Shute Shield in 2020 while the NHRU competition is cancelled due to COVID-19.
